Blood Disorders

What Are Blood Disorders?

Blood disorders are conditions or diseases that affect the blood or are caused by abnormalities within the blood. Blood flows throughout the body, into the heart, veins, arteries and capillaries. It is responsible for the removal of waste and the transfer of oxygen throughout the organs of the body. It also carries heat, hormones, vitamins and a lot more around the body. Because of these vital actions, blood disorders are very serious and in some cases can prove to be fatal without timely intervention.

The Varying Severity Of Disorders

Because of the many vital activities that blood is responsible for, blood disorders vary greatly from the less serious to the life threatening. They also vary in severity and effects.

Blood Disorders - Anaemia

Anaemia is one of the most common blood disorders. However, there are numerous forms of anaemia as well as other blood disorders and the correct diagnosis and treatment is required to prevent further complications. Generally speaking, however, anemia is a lack of red blood cells or haemoglobin within the blood. It prevents the blood from circulating oxygen to the organs and can have serious effects on patients. Anemia is one of the more easily recognised and, therefore, diagnosed of blood disorders.

Blood Disorders - Leukaemia

Leukaemia is another relatively common group of blood disorders. It is a cancer of the blood or bone marrow. Symptoms can range from severe bruising to excessive bleeding and it can be diagnosed via many different means. As with many blood disorders, the treatment for leukaemia depends largely on the patient's personal attributes including age, general health and other factors.

Many of the classes of blood disorders are potentially fatal. The timely intervention and accurate diagnosis are absolutely vital to the patient's chances of a complete recovery.
