Other Disorders: Substance Related Disorders

What Are Substance Related Disorders?

Many people drink socially without it causing a problem to their lives apart from the occasional bad head. Others become dependent or addicted to alcohol causing many physical, mental and emotional problems along the way. Similar problems are also associated with those who become dependent on other substances. Substance related disorders can include a dependency on prescription drugs, over the counter drugs and illegal drugs but all can prove damaging to the sufferer and to others.

Why People Suffer From Substance Related Disorders

Alcohol and other substances are often seen as an escape route from a person's problems and when they use this escape on an increasingly frequent basis there is a very real danger of developing substance related disorders. The behavioural, social, physical and mental effects that are associated with substance related disorders are well documented and varied and it is important that a sufferer gains the help and assistance they need as soon as possible.

Beating Substance Related Disorders

Beating substance related disorders can prove to be a lifetime battle. Once a patient beats the direct addiction that is associated with a lot of substances they also have to beat the psychological and mental addiction that also ensues. In some cases, patients may appear to have beaten substance related disorders but again become dependent after months or even years of disassociation with the substance. This means that substance related disorders usually affect a person's entire life as well as those of family, friends and loved ones.

Support Groups And Networks

The most popular and effective forms of treatment for substance related disorders consist of group and individual therapy. Alcoholics anonymous is the most renowned of these and has proven successful because of the network of long term help that is offered together with constant support for the individual and his or her network of family and friends. Without this level of support, it would be extremely difficult for a person to beat substance related disorders.
